About TheSolidWallOfWriting
If I had to hang my hat on these pages being about anything, it’s writing.
TheSolidWallOfWriting began as a collection of essays, journalism and fiction, built on a simple idea:
If it’s good, people will read it.
This site isn’t built around trends, algorithms or advertising. It isn’t designed to chase attention or to be everything to everyone. The writing comes first.
Here you’ll find long-form work across writing and story, culture, music, film, gaming and original fiction. Some pieces are reflective, some analytical, some narrative. Read what interests you. Skip what doesn’t. Pick a section and go. But I’d also say, try some of the things you’re not sure about. An article on music or American sports or Comic books is never just about the one thing. That’s why the “Culture” section is so full.
Why this exists
The Writing comes first is what drives this site.
I don’t start with a target audience.
I don’t start with a strategy.
I don’t start by asking what will perform well.
Why write? You write because you have something that has to be written.
What you want to write is never the question. The work may need shaping, editing and organising, but the impulse itself isn’t optional.
This site exists to give those words a place in the world.
Doing it differently
Most websites are built to be short, fast and optimised.
This one isn’t.
There’s no clickbait.
No race for constant output.
No attempt to reduce everything to soundbites.
The expectation online is that content should be brief, niche, marketable and easy to categorise. TheSolidWallOfWriting is simply a collection of work that doesn’t fit neatly into those expectations.
The bet is straightforward:
Good writing, and readers who still value it.
About the author
If you want to know who I am, read the work.
Some semblance of me filters through every piece. The voice, the interests, the perspective — it’s all there.
The author matters less than the words.
The site is written by Alasdair “Ally” Chisholm.
One last thing
If no algorithm predicts that anyone wants to read this, if word of mouth is all that carries it, if these pages reach only a small number of readers — that’s fine.
These words exist because they were always going to exist. I just never knew where they would live until now.
