The most important thing about Jean is that as soon as the Phoenix force ramps her abilities up to the highest levels, she goes from the girl on the team to the character with the most terrifying powers. She can manipulate matter and energy on a scary scale. I don’t think I’ve ever seen “girl” in Marvel Girl. There’s always been something feminine, composed and adult about her. I want to say that her progression is from girl to woman to goddess, shortly followed by the next step to an unbound threat on a grand cosmic scale and then, most importantly, to the woman who is able to contain all of that.
If you could fly, were bulletproof, had x-ray vision, heat vision, super hearing and were pretty much invulnerable, how restrained would anyone be? Restraint might be one of his greatest powers.
It took me a while of going there by myself to get to grips with being an outsider, on my own, in a place where the very culture is defined by being outside the norm.
At the one hour fifteen mark in the film I realised I was watching an exciting car chase and just didn’t care.
They didn’t watch Captain Marvel.
They watched what they thought Captain Marvel was supposed to be.
