I started a PhD at Reading University a long time ago and bailed halfway through. Life got in the way and whether or not blokes read fiction or not just didn’t seem important at the time. But I knew I’d not be able to leave it alone forever. It is often said that no one really wants to do a PhD. What they actually want to do is research into something very specific and it just so happens that doing the research as a PhD gives it some sort of academic validation. There are no promises of academic greatness or a teaching position at any University. That’s not why you do it. You do it for the love of the research. In these pages you will find essays that were part of an aborted PhD. It’s a lot more fun than you’d think it would be.
